WHAT IS LIONISM?
WE ARE NOT A POLITICAL ORGANIZATION, yet among our members will be found leaders of all political parties and factions.
WE ARE NOT A SOCIAL CLUB, yet we are directed to take an active interest in the social welfare of our various communities.
WE ARE NOT A YOUTH ORGANIZATION, yet we participate in so many youth programs and   projects in this nation and abroad that it is hard to determine if the dog is wagging the tail or the tail is wagging the dog.
WE ARE NOT A WELFARE ORGANIZATION, yet over the years, in good times and bad, countless thousands of less fortunate people have been the recipients of the generosity of Lions.
WE ARE NOT A SPORTS OR RECREATIONAL AGENCY, yet thousands of our youth have been thrilled with Miss Personality, Youth of the Year, Youth Exchange, Statewide Deaf Camp, Youth Insearch programs and many other activities built around the training of the minds and bodies of our youth, both boys and girls.
WE ARE NOT A RELIGIOUS BODY, yet the precepts we live by are familiar to the doctrines of the world´s spiritual bodies.
WE ARE NOT A MEDICAL OR HEALTH ORGANIZATION, yet our clubs have performed miracles in this wide panorama of community and individual service.
WE ARE NOT AN EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, yet thousands of students are today in schools built by Lions and benefiting from Lions youth skills  programs and our International Peace Poster Contest.
WE ARE NOT A UNITED NATIONS, yet we are an instrument of peace.
Lionism, born while the world was aflame, has grown strong under the
nourishment of freedom and liberty.
Lions....
People Just like you!

As one of more than 1.4 million men and women active in more than 43,000 Lions clubs around the world.  Every Lion is dedicated to community service and improvement. Men and women who believe that by working together they will accomplish far more than would be possible as individuals.  People who cherish the fellowship of their own club, but who also feel a close kinship with Lions in over 180 countries and areas throughout the world.  People that are serious about their commitment to humanitarian service, but have fun along the way.

About Lions Clubs International
Founded in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1917 by insurance agent Melvin Jones and others, Lions Clubs International has grown dramatically over the years. Lions are recognized worldwide for their services to the blind and the visually impaired. This service began when Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become her "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness" during the association´s 1925 international convention. The association is both non-political and non-sectarian.

Lions motto is ... We Serve

The Name
The proper name of our organization is "The International Association of Lions Clubs." Many Lions, however, prefer to use the shorter form of "Lions Clubs International."

The Emblem
Throughout the world, Lions are recognized by the emblem they wear on their lapels. It consists of a gold letter "L" on a circular purple field. Bordering this is a circular gold area with two lion profiles at either side facing away from the centre. The word, "Lions" appears at the top, and "International" at the bottom. Symbolically the lions face both the past and the future - proud of the past and confident of the future. You should wear the emblem with pride.

The Motto
The motto of every Lion is simply "We Serve." What better way to express the true mission of Lionism?

The Slogan
The slogan of the association is "Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations Safety," although our Club often prefers “ Living In Our Neighbours’ Service”.

Official Colours
The royal colours of purple and gold were selected as the official colour when the association was   organized in 1917. Purple stands for loyalty to friends and to one´s self, and for integrity of mind and heart. Gold symbolizes sincerity of purpose, liberty in judgment, purity in life and generosity in mind, heart and purse toward humanity.

  • We sometimes arrange to meet socially at a Theatre Night or a Progressive Dinner etc.
  •
  • Family and friends are made welcome at ALL functions.

Club structure & Projects

On an Annual basis we elect a new President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The 1st Vice President supervises the committees that concern themselves with Club Administration. The 2nd Vice President supervises the groups that develop service projects that spend our money while the 3rd Vice President oversees committees that work on raising funds.

Each year sees our members involved in our Letters to Santa project, the Youth of the Year Quest, assisting at local schools on their Fete days, and selling Lions Mints and Lions Christmas Cakes.

Some members have sent their children overseas to other Lions Clubs through the Lions Youth Exchange.

Our Club established bus shelters throughout Rochedale and Springwood, built the shelter and play equipment in  Belmore Park, planted all the trees on the footpaths in Rochedale, established the Springwood Ambulance, put wheelchairs and specialised equipment in schools and special schools, sent a young man to compete in the  para-olympics, constructed concrete paths and donated special  equipment to children who were deaf, blind or  physically disadvantaged.

The list goes on and will continue while we continue to respond to the Lions International Mission Statement –  To CREATE and FOSTER a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international co-operation.
